Local News Analysis: KSDK: 5
The first thing that I noticed about the 10 o’clock KSDK newscast was that there was only one anchor. Normally during the week, there will be two, Deanne Lane and Mike Bush. Another thing that I noticed was that they went straight into their anchoring. KMOV went straight into a live shot and did the anchoring later in the broadcast.
The only anchor was Mike Bush. Mike was wearing a dark grey suit coat, a white undershirt, and a white and grey tie. He looked very professional.
Jasmine Huda was the first reporter; she was reporting from the studio. The story that she was covering was about the robbery at the Calhoun Elementary School. Her stand up was right outside the school.
Steve Handleman was the second reporter and he was doing a story on the presidential elections. He reported live in Washington and was outside the White House for his stand up.
The third reporter was Jeff Small and he was live in the newsroom. His package was on the Decision ’08 updates; he did not have a stand up.
One of the stories that I remember was the robbery at Calhoun Elementary School. They broke in and stole money, electronics and medicine. It happened late Tuesday or early Wednesday day in a town called Hardin, Illinois. The robbers have not been caught, but it is suspected to be teens.
Another story that I remember from the broadcast is a woman named Mackenzie Gruenewald was accused of manslaughter for killing her unborn baby. When she went in to labor the baby was stillborn and there was meth in her system.
The third story I remember is Megan Meier’s, the teen who killed herself because of a myspace conversation, mom talked on the Today Show about her daughter’s suicide.
My overall impression of the newscast was I thought it was great. I think that Channel 5 is very credible because they do a great job explaining their stories over the air, and their website has all their stories on there with videos also; I have never heard of them broadcasting false information. I have grown up watching Channel 5 so I will always watch it to get my initial information from. I trust Channel 5 and will always watch them.
