Local Newscast Analysis: KTVI
The first thing that I noticed about the KTVI broadcast was that they started their broadcast off with an over-view of their entire broadcast. I really liked this because I can decide whether or not I want to stay tuned in to watch. I think this could work in their favor or not so much in their favor because people might not want to watch what they are going to have on.
The show that I watched was the 9:00 p.m. and Mandy Murphey and Tom O’Neil were the anchors. Mandy Murphey was wearing a blue silky blouse with a half zipper in the front. Tom O’Neil was wearing a black suit jacket, a white button up collared shirt underneath, and a light blue printed tie.
There were not a lot of reporters out on live broadcasts during the newscasts because there were a lot of stories in the studio to broadcast. The first reporter was Sean Conroy and he was reporting live from Main Street. He did not have a stand up in his package but he was live. His story was about the bars on Main Street and the laws they are trying to pass to prevent profanity. The only other reporter was Theresa Woodard; she was reporting from downtown St. Louis about the MySpace scandals. She also did not have a stand up in her package.
The first story that I remember is a 13 year old boy, Brendon Wile, was hit and killed by a driver by Green Park and Lemay Ferry. He was not on his skateboard but the driver could not avoid hitting him. The second story that I remember is the story about ending the profanity in the bars on Main Street. The bill will cover things such as dancing on tables, cussing and underage drinking. Lastly, I remember the story about MySpace’s enhanced safety guidelines. They are trying to pass the guideline that teens under the age of 16 have to set their privacy settings on their profile so that only their friends can look at it.
My overall impression of the newscast was good. I thought that they did a great job, but sometimes I feel like they try to do too much and mess some things up because of it. But all in all, I thought they did really good. I think the team seems credible because they look and sound professional and seem like they are ready for their stories. I would watch this station again because I trust them and, for the most part, I like the layout of their broadcasts.
